32nd Sunday on Ordinary Time

Fr. Rojin • November 10, 2023

Reflecting on the Gospel of Matthew 25:1-13, which is read on the 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are invited to contemplate the Parable of the Ten Virgins. This passage serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preparedness and vigilance in our spiritual journey. The wise virgins, with their lamps filled with oil, symbolize the readiness that comes from a life lived in authentic faith and good works, always awaiting the Lord's coming. In contrast, the foolish virgins represent a superficial faith, unprepared and easily caught off-guard. The central theme of the passage is clear: the necessity of being prepared at all times for the final coming of Christ. It's a call to live in a state of constant readiness, not in fear, but in hopeful anticipation, embracing the virtues of prudence, faith, and diligent devotion. The closing of the door is not just a warning of a missed opportunity but a sobering reminder that there is an ultimate moment of accountability and that time is a gift not to be squandered.

I became a part of the St. Jerome Church community in July 2015, with a clear vision of completing my doctoral studies and engaging in parish ministry. With the support of the church, I was able to achieve my goals and gain a sense of accomplishment. However, the time has come for me to bid farewell to St. Jerome, and I will be departing on January 10, 2024. My tenure at St. Jerome's has been akin to the Parable of the Ten Virgins, emphasizing the importance of being prepared and ready. My departure is not abrupt, but rather a transition that has been anticipated since the beginning, as this tenure is just a temporary chapter in my longer story of ministry and service. The diocese in India has kindly granted me a one-year sabbatical leave for introspection, rest, and spiritual growth. This is an invaluable opportunity for me to gain clarity and chart the course for my future ministry.

As I get ready to leave St. Jerome Church, you may be worried about its future. However, I have some good news that promises continuity and hope. The congregation has expressed concerns about what will happen to the church after I depart, but the bishop has reassured us that St. Jerome will continue to stand independently and won't merge with neighboring parishes. He wants to focus on more collaboration rather than a merger for St. Jerome. His satisfaction with the church's current trajectory is a testament to the collective efforts of the community. Now, the focus will shift to spiritual and collective growth, building upon the solid foundation of maintained infrastructure and revitalized spaces.

The promise of growth at St. Jerome Church is not just a hope but a visible reality, thanks to the dedication of its community leaders from various sectors. With a new pastor who brings fresh vision and perspective, the church is well-positioned to enter its next chapter of development and prosperity. Father Dave will continue to be an integral part of the community and act as a liaison for both the congregation and the incoming pastor. Although marked by change, this transition phase is full of potential and excitement for what lies ahead for St. Jerome Church. The community can look forward to a future of spiritual enrichment and growth, guided by steadfast leadership and unified by a shared vision.

At St. Jerome Church, I've had an enriching journey of personal and spiritual growth. Father David, the staff, and the volunteers have been nurturing and supportive. My life's essence can be captured in the word "Explore" - I have an innate desire to discover and engage with the world and its lessons. The exploration at St. Jerome has been nothing short of extraordinary, leaving me with profound memories and experiences that I will carry forward as a source of strength and guidance. These memories will serve as a sturdy pillar, supporting me in all my future endeavors. As there is still time to share moments with this beautiful community, I look forward to expressing my gratitude personally to as many of you as possible, cherishing the time we have left, and celebrating the journey we’ve shared. Thank you for your continued support; yours lovingly – Fr. Rojin
